📋 Overview
MyCar ("we", "our", or "the app") is a mobile application built to help you save favourite places, remember where you parked, and organise your important documents. This Privacy Policy explains how the app handles your data.
📸 Camera & Photo Library Permission
MyCar requests access to your device camera and photo library for one specific purpose:
- AI Document Scanning: You can point your camera at a physical document (e.g. TÜV sticker, vehicle registration, insurance card) to extract and save its expiry date using optical character recognition (OCR). You may also pick an existing photo from your gallery.
When you initiate a scan, the document image is sent securely over HTTPS to the Google Gemini API solely for the purpose of text and date extraction. The image is not stored on Google’s servers after the response is returned, and only the extracted information (document type and expiry date) is saved locally on your device.
We never access your camera or photo library in the background. Camera and gallery access is only activated when you explicitly initiate a document scan.
📍 Location Permission
MyCar uses your device location for the following features:
- Park Here: Saves your precise GPS coordinates when you tap "Park Here", and uses the Google Maps Geocoding API to convert them into a human-readable address.
- Search Bias: Google Places Autocomplete results are biased within a 50 km radius of your current position to show more relevant suggestions.
Location is only accessed in the foreground and only when you actively use one of these features. Your parking location is stored locally on your device only — it is never uploaded to our servers or shared without your explicit action (e.g. using the Share button).
🔔 Notifications Permission
MyCar may send local notifications to remind you of upcoming document expiry dates. These notifications are generated entirely on-device and are not sent from any remote server.
- You control which documents have reminders set.
- Notifications include action buttons to "Dismiss" or "View Details" for a specific document.
- You can disable notifications at any time in your device Settings.
💾 Data Storage
All app data is stored locally on your device using AsyncStorage and the device file system. This includes:
- Saved places (name, coordinates, category, notes, favourite status)
- Your parking location and timestamp
- Scanned and manually entered document data and attached images
- Your theme preference and language setting
- Recently visited places log
This data is not backed up to any cloud service operated by us. Standard device backups (e.g. iCloud, Google Backup) may include this data according to their own privacy policies.
Uninstalling the app permanently deletes all locally stored data.
🌐 Third-Party Services
MyCar integrates the following third-party services. Each has its own privacy policy:
- Google Maps Platform (Places Autocomplete, Geocoding, Maps SDK) — Google Privacy Policy. Your current location coordinates may be sent to Google solely to bias search results and to convert GPS coordinates to a human-readable address.
- Google Gemini API (AI document scanning) — Google Privacy Policy. Document images are sent to Gemini only when you initiate a scan. Images are processed for text extraction and are not retained by Google after the request completes.
All network requests are made securely over HTTPS.
👶 Children's Privacy
MyCar is not directed at children under 13 years of age (or the applicable age in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
🔄 Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Effective Date" at the top of this page and increment the version number. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
